At our symposium in Washington DC, we were asked to come up with an essential question that would guide our inquiries and give meaning to our travels. I have always been interested in issues of equity and find the privatizing of American school's troubling, to say the least. Latin American has a long history of large economic disparities that are institutional in nature. My guiding thought or question was:
What role does public education play in ensuring equal economic opportunity for all citizens? What role does outreach play in leveling the playing field and ensuring that each student has the opportunity to reach their potential?
